Job Description
Missions
The position is part of the HL-LHC program at CERN, specifically focused on the construction of the future high-granularity calorimeter for the CMS detector. The very high instantaneous luminosity of the HL-LHC will result in extremely high particle rates, a large average number of pile-up events, and intense radiation in the innermost regions of future detector systems. The current forward calorimeters of the CMS experiment will not be able to withstand such high particle fluxes and radiation levels. They will therefore be completely replaced by a new, fully redesigned and innovative detector featuring enhanced radiation tolerance and a significantly higher number of readout channels: HGCAL (High Granularity CALorimeter).
The selected engineering assistant will become a key member of a team of mechanical and electronics experts involved in the assembly of the HGCAL detector, the future forward calorimeter of CMS. The assistant's activities will focus on the assembly of components known as “cassettes.” These tasks will include integrating modules containing silicon sensors and readout electronics onto a copper plate (heat exchanger), along with various electronic boards, cabling, testing procedures, and the use of handling tools. This position requires a high level of reliability, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to follow complex assembly procedures. With sufficient training, the engineering assistant may also contribute to the training and supervision of less experienced colleagues.
Activity
The selected engineering assistant will contribute in particular to:
The assembly and integration of HGCAL cassette components (modules with silicon sensors, electronic boards, routing and connection of optical fibers and power supplies)
Reading and following detailed mechanical and electronic schematics, as well as procedures and checklists
Handling sensitive electronic components while complying with clean-room conditions
Performing quality control and functional inspections during and after assembly
Identifying and reporting integration issues
Documenting assembly work through reports and tracking/quality assurance databases
Handling cassette manipulation and lifting tools
Your Profil
Skills
Minimum required qualification: Associate degree (Bac+2 equivalent)
Technical diploma (or equivalent) in electronics, mechatronics, or a related field
Manual dexterity and familiarity with precision assembly tools
Ability to work independently and rigorously follow established procedures
Knowledge of optical fiber handling and connections
Experience in precision electronic assembly
Good level of English
Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills
Your Work Environment
AICP is a laboratory of the CNRS National Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics (IN2P3), located on the French site of CERN in Prévessin. The activity will therefore take place on the CERN site, within the CMS collaboration, with strong synergies with the CMS team of the LLR laboratory (CNRS–École Polytechnique, Palaiseau).
The selected engineering assistant will work in an international team environment under the supervision of a researcher from LLR/AICP. Depending on the project phase, the work may take place in a laboratory, a clean room, or a detector hall. The position may require extended periods of concentration or manual tasks in a clean-room environment.
