The Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace is offering a 18-month scientist position for studying the interactions of climate change with wind energy within the EUCP H2020 project. In particular, the candidate will analyse new climate simulations (in particular with convection-permitting resolution) in their capacity to simulate wind power. The candidate will interact with wind energy stakeholders and develop simplified and more realistic climate impact modelling and generate climate change scenarios for the electricity production in Europe.
• The work will include the assessment of global and regional model skill to simulate wind power in a sufficiently accurate manner so they can be used for application, by comparing with several observations dataset.
• The work will also be devoted to understand past and future trends in winds and wind power in Europe. This will be done in a collaborative environment together with EUCP partners, and a few wind power stakeholders. One or several articles will be expected from the science developments.
• The work will require a climate and statistical scientific background. Most analyses will involve the use of statistical theories and methods.
• An understanding of climate models and simulations is required.
• An interest in communicating research and innovation toward non-academic institutions is required.
Climate-related challenges constrain a rapidly evolving energy sector. Ambitious climate change mitigation requires that low-carbon energies grow very fast in the coming decades. This rapid transition towards renewables makes the energy production, transmission and distribution increasingly sensitive to weather and climate variability. Energy producers need to anticipate resources, their variability at seasonal time scales and their trends over decades. Grid operators need to identify black-out risks, demand and supply patterns. Climate change also modulates the weather impact to energy systems. Changing precipitation patterns may affect the management of hydropower, wind and solar power resource. IPSL participates to the EUropean Climate Projection (EUCP) H2020 project, designed to develop a dedicated climate modelling system for Europe and help developing impact studies in several sectors. IPSL is in charge of developing several use cases for the energy sector, in particular wind energy. Several studies exhibit long-term changes in wind power potential, both in observations and climate simulations. However these trends are not fully understood. The EUCP project is an opportunity to provide advances on this question, with new regional climate simulations, in particular with unprecedented resolution of a few kilometres
