Job Description

Thesis Subject

As a PhD student, you will study and develop advanced nanoscale techniques to (i) fabricate ultrasmall plasmonic cavities, (ii) to characterise their coupling with light and quantum emitters, and (iii) unveil their potential as plasmonic catalysts. You will learn synthetic chemistry approaches, the manipulation of nanocrystals via templated assembly, nanofabrication strategies (spin-coating, e-beam lithography, etching), various techniques for optical (microscopy, absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence), chemical (FTIR, Raman, EDX) and structural (SEM, TEM, X-ray diffraction) characterisation. You will develop and study new plasmonic architectures and metasurfaces.
You will perform this project in the group “Nanoscale Materials for Energy, Optics and Catalysis” (NanoEPOC) under the supervision of Dr. Beniamino Sciacca. The team has a strong background in synthetic chemistry, surface functionalisation, nanophotonics, nanofabrication, nanoscale photovoltaic devices, and in the characterisation of optical, structural, electrical and chemical properties of materials. The hosting environment is equipped with state-of-the art facilities in nanofabrication and material characterisation (SEM, TEM, FIB, microspectroscopy, XRD, cleanroom). We are looking for an outstanding experimental physicist /chemist / engineer, passionate about nanoscience, motivated by interdisciplinary research and with a strong drive to excel in a competitive international environment. The position is intended as a full-time employment for the duration of three years. The successful candidate will start in fall 2026.
The project, financed by the ANR PRC “UPiCO”, coordinated by Dr. Beniamino Sciacca, in collaboration with Institute d'Optique (Bordeaux) and Institute Fresnel (Marseille).
