Job Description
Thesis Subject
We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join our team and develop innovative techniques for material structuring using spatiotemporally shaped femtosecond lasers. This project aims to explore new approaches for 3D additive manufacturing and the creation of internal nanostructures by leveraging precise control over laser-matter interactions.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a candidate with a Master's degree in physics, photonics, or materials science, and a strong background in experimental work, ideally in optics, spectroscopy, or laser-matter interaction. Proficiency in English is essential, as our team is international. Scientific curiosity, rigor, and initiative are key qualities for this position.
Keywords: femtosecond lasers, spatiotemporal shaping, material structuring, additive manufacturing, plasmas, nonlinear optics.
Research Project
The PhD will focus on using spatiotemporally shaped femtosecond laser beams to structure materials with nanometric precision. You will develop optical setups incorporating spatial light modulators (SLMs) to generate beam profiles tailored to ionization dynamics and energy deposition. Your work will include:
– Optimizing laser parameters (spatial and temporal pulse shaping, scanning speed, precursor concentration) to control the quality and reproducibility of structures.
– Exploring parallel additive manufacturing through spatial beam shaping to enhance resolution and production throughput.
– Characterizing generated nanostructures using advanced microscopy and spectroscopy techniques.
The goal is to demonstrate the potential of these methods for applications in photonics, microfabrication, and the development of functional materials.
Your Work Environment
Research will be carried out within the CNRS FEMTO-ST Institute in a highly multicultural team. Our newly commissioned scientific building provides access to a wide range of basic science and technological facilities including a suite of dedicated photonics laboratories, 1300 m2 of clean rooms, and parallel computing center.
Besancon is in the East of France, 2 hours 15 minutes from Paris by train and near the foothills of the Jura mountains, close to excellent hiking and mountain bike trails, ski stations and rock-climbing formations.
