Job Description
Missions
The successful candidate will join Team 1 at the CARMeN UMR 6064 Institute in Mont-Saint Aignan and will work closely with members of the TotalEnergies Research&Technologies Gonfreville research group. The mission consists of developing experimental methods for tandem mass spectrometry of complex organic mixtures on FT-ICR MS, in particular two-dimensional mass spectrometry. The successful candidate will also develop computer tools for data processing for two-dimensional mass spectrometry of complex organic mixtures. The methods developed will be used to analyze samples in partnership with TotalEnergies. Finally, the successful candidate will participate in writing scientific articles and giving presentations at national and international conferences.
Activity
The successful candidate will be required to develop analytical methods in two-dimensional mass spectrometry for the characterization of complex organic mixtures such as bio-oils derived from biomass pyrolysis.
Your Profil
Skills
The successful candidate will have proven knowledge and expertise in the fields of analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry, and demonstrate an interest in managing complex data. Additional expertise in solution separation methods (chromatography, etc.), mass spectrometry imaging, advanced spectrometry (ion mobility spectrometry, etc.), metabolomics, or programming (Python, R, Matlab, etc.) would also be appreciated. Fluency in scientific English, preferably acquired in an internationally renowned laboratory, will be an important criterion.
The successful candidate will have expertise in analytical chemistry and proven research experience in the development of high-resolution mass spectrometry methods, for example through scientific publications in this field. Experience in the advanced characterization of small molecules (metabolomics, complex organic matter, etc.) would be appreciated, as would experience in two-dimensional mass spectrometry.
Your Work Environment
Mass spectrometry has become an essential technique in many fields, such as the environment and energy. In particular, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR), with its very high resolution and very high mass measurement accuracy, is an indispensable tool for analyzing the most complex organic mixtures. The major challenges today relate to the implementation of FTICR couplings with separation methods to limit signal suppression effects and differentiate between isomers. This involves, in particular, the implementation of faster detection methods and highly complex data management. In this context, combining ion mobility spectrometry with FTICR mass spectrometry also appears to be a particularly promising method for obtaining structural information from complex mixtures. The successful candidate will participate in the implementation of methodological and instrumental developments as well as new applications related to these couplings. This will take place within the framework of the arrival at the University of Rouen-Normandy, in 2024, of a new-generation 18 T FTICR mass spectrometer, which will be the most powerful in Europe. The research project will be carried out within the framework of the IC2MC (International Complex Matrices Molecular Characterization) research consortium, in close collaboration with the TRTG (Total Research&Technologies Gonfreville) research group.
