Job Description

Missions

Participation to the n2EDM experiment, measuring the electric dipole moment of the neutron to search for new physics.

Activity

•Participation to the measurement campaign with ultracold neutrons at Institut Paul Scherrer (PSI)
•Participation to the magnetic mapping campaign in 2027 at PSI
•Online data quality analysis
•Development of the analysis code for the first n2EDM science data

Your Profil

Skills

•PhD in experimental physics, training in particle, nuclear or atomic physics
•Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in an international team environment
•Data analysis and instrumentation
•Good level in English (speaking Frecnh is a plus).

Your Work Environment

The Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie (LPSC) in Grenoble, France, is a laboratory conducting experimental and theoretical research in fundamental physics, employing about 230 people. It is a joint laboratory between the CNRS-IN2P3 and Grenoble University (UGA). The UCN team, with four permanent staff members and two PhD students, is doing precision experiments to probe fundamental symmetries and interactions with ultracold neutrons, in particular to probe the CP symmetry with the search for a non-zero electric dipole moment of the neutrons.
We are members of the international nEDM collaboration, pursuing an experimental programme to measure the electric dipole moment of the neutron at the Ultracold neutron source of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. In the period 2010 – 2017 we have exploited the apparatus which holds the sensitivity record and produced the most stringent limit for the nEDM. Since 2017 we are installing n2EDM, the next generation instrument. The n2EDM apparatus is presently in advanced commissioning phase, ultracold neutrons were injected in the apparatus for the first time in July 2023. The team at LPSC is responsible for several sub-systems of the experiment, namely (i) the atomic co-magnetometer (ii) the UCN switch (iii) the magnetic field mapper robot (iv) the data monitoring interface, a web framework to monitor the data.
The position will be based at LPSC in Grenoble and the project requires frequent travels to PSI in Switzerland, typically 6 weeks per year.
