Missions

Fractional Quantum Hall effect remains a largely unsolved problem despite its discovery over 40 years ago. Recent experimental advances have revealed a plethora of fractional plateaus, particularly stabilized in graphene multilayers or TMDs. Understanding this rich physics is especially interesting due to the presence of exotic excitations, potentially non-Abelian.

The TensQHE project aims to develop modern numerical tools based on tensor networks, within an open-source framework, enabling the systematic study of these materials.

Activities

The work will involve developing tensor network numerical codes, building upon existing libraries and codes, to study general models of the fractional quantum Hall effect, particularly multi-orbital systems. The postdoctoral researcher will work on one-dimensional codes based on DMRG, and may also explore the use of intrinsically two-dimensional networks.

From a physics perspective, the study will focus on graphene multilayers and TMDs. Collaborations for analyzing conformal field theories on the "fuzzy sphere" or utilizing non-Abelian symmetries are possible.

The postdoctoral researcher is also encouraged to pursue their own research activities.

Skills

Requirements:
- PhD in (theoretical) physics, preferably with experience in using tensor networks for condensed matter systems.

Desired skills:
- Knowledge of tensor networks. Experience with their application to two-dimensional systems will be valued.
- Familiarity with the physics of the fractional quantum Hall effect, or more broadly, with strongly correlated/topological materials.

Work Context

The research project is part of the JCJC TensQHE project funded by the ANR (French National Research Agency).

The host laboratory for the postdoctoral researcher will be the Laboratoire de Physique et Modélisation des Milieux Condensés (LPMMC), located at the heart of the Polygone Scientifique in Grenoble. It is a small theoretical laboratory (13 permanent researchers) within Grenoble's larger physics hub. In addition to the 4 researchers at LPMMC working on these topics, the postdoctoral researcher may interact with experimental teams at the nearby Institut Néel or at EPFL.

- Flexible start date between December 2025 and October 2026.
- Health insurance included (French fixed-term contract).
- Regular conferences and seminars
