Veridical judgments: information theory and semantic approaches.

Constraints and risks

Veridical judgments are judgments about the truth of content, with varying degrees of speaker commitment depending, among other things, on the evidence available. Well-founded veridical judgments give rise to informative assertions. Conversely, in the absence of evidence, the speaker will be obliged, in a cooperative conversation, to point out his lack of knowledge.
These judgements have been studied within the framework of linguistics on the one hand, and information philosophy on the other.
The aim is to (i) study and compare these two frameworks (ii) identify the linguistic strategies underlying these judgments (iii) precisely define the notions of information and disinformation in a theoretical and formal framework, (iv) validate the notions on a corpus from social networks.
The PhD candidate will also contribute to the organisation of international conferences and workshops.
The doctoral student will be affiliated with the Institut Jean Nicod. She/he will travel to the University of Chicago for 3 months a year.
