Missions

The Dynamic Meteorology Laboratory is looking for an engineer (M/F) in instrumental design. In the frame of a large-scale scientific project relating to the non-invasive monitoring of plant functioning, the candidate will participate in the design and production of optical instruments for active remote sensing of vegetation fluorescence. As part of an instrumental development team and in conjunction with project partners, he or she will study scientific requirements, propose appropriate technical solutions, implement them and conduct the validation tests.

Activities

As part of the Fluorescence Group of the ABC(t) team (Atmosphère Biosphère Climat – Télédétection) at the Dynamic Meteorology Laboratory, the candidate will be in charge of the design and realization of laboratory mock-ups and field prototypes of optical instruments for the monitoring of vegetation.
He or she:
- Will study the needs, propose suitable technical solutions, evaluate them and implement them, in tight relation with the members of the project team and external partners
- Will implement pulsed optical sources, low-noise optical detectors, miniature spectrometers
- Design and produce electronic cards for analog signals conditioning,
- Design and produce data acquisition, control/command software and data processing,
- Manage the intervention of specialists from different fields (design office, mechanical production, subcontractors)
- Organize supplies in compliance with the public procurement code
- Conduct operational and validation tests, write test reports and technical documentation.
- Will participate in field experiments.

Skills

- Very good knowledge in the field of optical signal measurement (detectors, analog electronics, data acquisition chain).
- Good knowledge in data acquisition software (Labview).
- Good knowledge in data and signal processing (Matlab, Python).
- Practice in electronic card development.
- Basic knowledge of optics, photonics, spectrometry, electronic and mechanical construction.
- Technical English.

Work Context

The Dynamic Meteorology Laboratory (LMD) studies the mechanisms that determine climate and its evolution. Through the process of photosynthesis, vegetation is a major player in carbon exchanges between the atmosphere and continental surfaces. In this context, the LMD is developing means of observing the functioning of vegetation at different scales using passive and active optical techniques. Keen to provide its climate expertise to the development of new forms of energy production, the LMD is leader in the AGRIPV-ER project, which brings together five national partners, with the aim of studying and optimizing agrivoltaic production systems, combining photovoltaic panels and agriculture in the same place. The position is linked to the instrumental development of a pilot agrivoltaic farm located on the site of the SIRTA observatory at the Ecole Polytechnique. The candidate will be integrated into the Fluorescence and Remote Sensing group of the ABC(t) team at the LMD, and will work in close connection with members of the AGRIPV project.

The position is located in a sector under the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival is authorized by the competent authority of the MESR.

Constraints and risks

Field experiments at SIRTA site at Ecole Polytechnique, as well as occasional travels are to be expected.
