Missions
The successful candidate will develop a personal research endeavour linked to the issues addressed by the France-Quebec Research Chair on Contemporary Issues in Freedom of Expression (Colibex). More specifically, the work of the person recruited will fall within the scope of Axis 1 of the Chair (Freedom of expression, democracy and fundamental human rights), coordinated in France by Thomas Hochmann (University of Paris Nanterre, IUF). It will focus on questions that affect the legal framework of freedom of expression, for example and without any exclusion: the criminalization of hate speech in comparative law, the regulation of social networks, the question of opinion channels on television, the legal status of lies and other false speeches, the evolution of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights on freedom of expression, etc. These lines of inquiry are in no way limiting. The work may cover any geographical area, without restriction to France and Quebec. It may come under different disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, with priority given to legal studies (public law or private law).
Activities
It is expected that the contract will result in, or contribute to the production of, scientific papers and publications, as well as dissemination to a wider audience.
The successful candidate will take part in running and promoting the Colibex Chair (contributing to the organisation of events, communication, etc.).
Skills
- A PhD in the humanities and social sciences (preferably public law or private law) on a topic relevant to the subject of the contract.
- Good knowledge of the research field concerned.
- Fluency in French and English; fluency in other languages appreciated.
- Ability to present research results orally and in writing (communications, publications, etc.).
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary and international team.
- Autonomy and good organisation.
Work Context
The recruited person will be attached to the CTAD laboratory (UMR 7074) and will carry out their activities under the responsibility of Thomas Hochmann. It will be part of the collective dynamics of the laboratory and the Colibex chair.
Founded in Nanterre in 1978 by Michel Troper, recognized as UMR in 2001, joined by jurists from ENS-PSL since 2005, integrating the Center for Research and Studies on Fundamental Rights (CREDOF, center of the University of Paris -Nanterre, several members of which were already part of the CTAD) since 2013, the CTAD is the only research unit in France dedicated to the theory of law as well as the study of fundamental rights. The CTAD aims to develop research in legal theory and to analyze, with the help of theoretical tools, legal systems and fundamental rights in the present and in the past.
Constraints and risks
Depending on the subject of the research, the person recruited may be required to carry out short-term research and dissemination work in France and abroad, particularly in Quebec.
Additional Information
The contract will be for a minimum of 9 months. Depending on the funding available, this period may be extended to 12 months.
