Description of the thesis topic

Nitrogen treatment in wastewater treatment plants is not fully effective nowadays, leading to significant discharges into rivers. The solution proposed in this project is to separate urine at the source and through electrochemical treatment to remove urea while producing hydrogen gas, which can be stored and used in fuel cells. The principle consists of oxidizing urea at the anode and water at the cathode with solar power photo-assistance.
The aim of this thesis will be to study the mechanism of urea electrooxidation on different metal anodes and the degradation/deactivation processes at the anode.
This PhD contract is part of the HYUREA project, which was selected by the French National Research Agency (ANR) in the context of the 2019 call for generic projects.

Work Context

This work will be conducted at LISE, a joint laboratory of CNRS and Sorbonne Université (SU) within an international community. Located in downtown Paris, the LISE is well connected by Subway, Bus and Suburban rain (RER).

Constraints and risks
