Description of the thesis topic

The algal biomasses are valorized in a targeted way by recovery of lipids and molecules with high added value, such as pigments (very small quantity). The important issue of developing other value chains is identified as a strategic need to develop by 2030 a production and value chain of algae in France, with in particular the obtaining of platform molecules for chemistry by processes called "3G+". Among the possible routes, the hydrothermal liquefaction, catalytic and with partial oxidation (150-300°C, 5-15 MPa) of algal biomasses (micro and macro algae) into platform molecules (chemistry, pharmacy, biomaterials ...) is chosen for this project. This pathway presents a scientific barrier to its development: the reaction products are multiple due to lack of selectivity and leading to a costly downstream separation. The main objective of the project will be to determine the possible reaction routes by acting on two levers: the type of catalyst used and the "cursor" of the O2 stoichiometry (partial oxidation) which will be varied between 0 (direct liquefaction condition "LD") and 1 or more (wet oxidation condition "OVH").
