Description of the thesis topic

In the framework of the ITN (Initial Training Network) EvoDrops, we offer a 3-year PhD position.
EvoDrops is an european consortium consisting of more than 10 partners on the them of droplet-based microfluidics for applications in directed evolution. The principle of Directed Evolution (Nobel Price 2018) mimics in vitro the mechanisms of natural evolution that led to the emergence of functional molecules in living organisms. To properly function, directed evolution is based on high-throughput screening tools and droplet-based microfluidics here provide the toolbox for the screening and selection of thousands of compounds per second.

The objective of the thesis is to develop tools and methods in biochemistry compatible with droplet-based microfluidics for the directed evolution of enzymes of therapeutic and industrial interest. A part of the thesis will be realised in one of partner lab of the network (Univ. Glasgow, Laboratory of Prof. Thomas Franke) and implies strong interactions with all the members of the network, including academic laboratories and companies.

The candidate must be interested in a multi-disciplinary approach mixing physics, chemistry, biology and engineering and he must have experience in one of these area. A good level of English is required, as well as good communication skills and reporting capabilities.

Work Context

The group Soft Micro Systems (SMS) is led by Prof. Jean-Christophe Baret at the Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal (Pessac, F). The research thems of the group encompasses the technologies of microfluidics for applications in biotechnology and synthetic biology.

Salary : The gross monthly income is 2860 euros (including mobility allowance).
