The Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD) of IPSL is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist to work on atmospheric Radiative Transfer (RT) modeling. The scientist will work within the ABC(t) team of LMD in charge of Atmospheric Radiation Analysis with the main goal of improving simulation of atmospheric transmittance and radiance in the thermal and short-wave infrared domain. Particular emphasis will be given to the improvement of existing RT models, for instance through the modelling of continuum absorptions, or the non-LTE problem. Current applications of such RT models concern several existing or planned Earth observing space missions of CNES (IASI, IASI-NG, Merlin and MicroCarb). The position is located at the Ecole polytechnique, Palaiseau, France.


• Developing or implementing new modeling schemes (e.g. line-mixing, absorption continua, CFCs, non-LTE, solar contribution) to be included in the operational updated version of the RT models, with the aim of fully benefiting from the spectral and radiometric characteristics of recent and future instruments in the thermal and short-wave infrared.
• Statistical characterization of the improvement through the use of LMD quasi-operational validation chain of RT models.
• Interpretation of the results for presentation at scientific meetings and for publication in peer-reviewed journals of the atmospheric sciences.


Strong experience with atmospheric radiative transfer modeling; knowledge in infrared spectroscopy also appreciated.
• Familiarity with atmospheric remote sensing and climate variable retrieval.
• Strong computational skills.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.

Work Context

At LMD, a joint CNRS-Ecole polytechnique-Ecole Normale Supérieure-Sorbonne Université laboratory, more than 200 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic of Earth system. The ABC(t) of LMD is specialized in the study of climate variables and processes from the analysis of the radiation emitted and diffused by the atmosphere and the surface, and measured by active or passive spaceborne or airborne instruments. In particular, the team has an internationally recognized expertise in the analysis of high spectral resolution satellite observations, mixing an in-depth knowledge of atmospheric gas spectroscopy and advanced modeling of direct and inverse radiative transfer problems. The group develops and maintains: (i) monochromatic RT models recognized as official models for several Earth Observation missions from CNES; (ii) the GEISA spectroscopic database; (iii) a end-to-end validation chain based on comparisons of spectra measured from space or the ground and simulated spectra for known atmospheric situations.
