Missions

An international consortium is inviting applications for three research positions in cosmology and astrophysics (in Paris, Marseille and Sao Paulo), to work on the analysis of quasars at z>2. The successful applicant will join this consortium spanning France, Brazil, Italy and Spain. The consortium is supported by ANR and FAPESP and aims at exploiting the complementarity between two large astrophysical surveys of unprecedented quality to make breakthroughs in cosmology and galaxy formation. These surveys are J-PAS and WEAVE-QSO, both of which are in the process of starting survey operations lasting 5 years or more. Successful applicants will join an active wider community within these two surveys.

Activities

Scientific activities will be focussed on absorber and structure identification using the Lyman alpha forest, large-scale structure correlation functions, and support work building WEAVE-QSO. The successful applicant will work closely with the WEAVE-QSO lead Matthew Pieri at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM). The position involves collaborating with Raul Abramo (Sao Paulo), Clotilde Laigle (Paris), Michele Fumagalli (Milan) and other researchers in the consortium and in WEAVE-QSO. Complementary involvement in DESI is also possible.

Skills

- Experience in cosmology and/or extragalactic astrophysics required ;
- Experience applying machine learning methods valuable.

Work Context

LAM is an internationally respected research institute of around 200 people between science teams and technical services. LAM is particularly active in large survey collaborations such as WEAVE, DESI, PFS, Euclid, ELT-MOSAIC and MSE. The applicant will have access to high-performance computer clusters, and a modern working environment. Furthermore, substantial consortium travel funds are available.

Constraints and risks

Travels will be necessary to disseminate the results and to interact with the consortium.

Additional Information

The position Marseille is for a duration of 2 years starting between April and October 2023 (negotiable) and extendable by 1 year (contingent on performance).
Applications should include a cover letter, a research statement of no more than 4 pages (including both a summary of prior research and a plan), a curriculum vitae, and a list of publications. Three letters of recommendation should also be sent to matthew.pieri@lam.fr. Enquires about the position should be sent to matthew.pieri@lam.fr.
