The postdoctoral student will aim to analyze in detail the various ways in which employees are now called upon to become the main actors in their careers, the places where this injunction is expressed, the way in which it is disseminated and received, the mechanisms that support this shift, the uses made of it, their effective scope and the inequalities that it is likely to increase.

The scientific contribution of the postdoctoral reseach will be twofold. On the one hand, the challenge will be to question the bases of employment policies at European and national level, in order to understand how they now call on employees to become the main entrepreneurs of their career. To this end, it will be necessary to discuss the principles of justice in these policies. On the other hand, it will be a question of analyzing how this injunction to individual agency is applied to branch, company and workers' policies.
In this perspective, the postdoctoral student will contribute to the collective reflection on a cross-fertilization of the different theoretical approaches mobilized in the project: capability approach, clinical sociology and management tools approach. She/he will conduct interviews with European, national and industry/enterprise political actors. She/he will also have the prospect of carrying out a literature review on the policy tools calling for greater individual responsibility in the construction of professional pathways.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in political science, economy, management science or sociology. They will be highly motivated to complete a postdoctoral research mainly based on a qualitative approach of research (mainly semi-structured interviews). The postdoctoral student should have a scientific interest in the Capability Approach initiated by Amartya Sen, an intellectual curiosity and concern for policy analysis frameworks and be open to disciplines other than sociology.

Work Context

This postdoctoral contract is part of the Collaborative Research Project SQUAPIN, awarded in 2018 by the French National Research Agency (ANR). The consortium brings together 5 research teams (Céreq, LEST, CREG, Art-DEV, TSM-Research and CPN ) gathering some twenty researchers with, in the background, a question: what are the perspectives opened up for workers in low-skilled jobs facing the challenge of taking their own careers in hand?
For nearly twenty years in France, reforms of labour law and policies, as well as collective bargaining, have been the scene of repeated calls to display the picture of a free and responsible worker who needs to take responsibility for her/his professional development, as expressed by the Act The French law for the freedom to choose one's professional future The stated objective is to strengthen Individual agency of workers throughout their lives.
The research will be carried out at the Laboratoire d'Économie et de Sociologie du Travail (LEST). The postdoctoral student will be required to collaborate with the entire SQUAPIN consortium. The postdoctoral contract will be funded by the SQUAPIN research project supported by the ANR.
