Spaceborne lidar/radar systems are the tools of choice for retrieving the microphysical, optical and dynamic vertical properties of clouds on a global scale. For practical reasons, the retrieval algorithms often neglect certain radiative effects related to spatial heterogeneities of clouds, multiple scattering or attenuation. In order to interpret ground, airborne (RALI) and space (A-train, AEOLUS, EarthCARE, AOS/NASA, WIVERN/ESA, etc.) lidar/radar observables, LaMP is developing the reference lidar/radar simulator McRALI (Szczap and al., 2021) which takes into account the heterogeneous three-dimensional structure of the cloudy atmosphere, multiple scattering, attenuation, polarization and the Doppler effect.
As part of task T4.3 of the EECLAT project funded by the CNES and led by F. Szczap (LaMP), the mission of the recruited person will consist in continuing the development and analysis of the outputs of the McRALI simulator.


The activities are presented for information only and will be suggested by the person recruited according to their appetites:
- Technical improvements of McRALI (implementation of a sea surface, Brillouin scattering, interferometer models, pulsed-pair technique,…)
- Adaptation of McRALI for different lidar/radar systems (RALI, RTTOV-SCATT, AEOLUS, AOS, …)
- Validation of Doppler polarized spectrum and high spectral resolution simulated by McRALI
- Analysis of multiple scattering effects for RTTOV-SCATT (link with the IMOTEP/CNES project led by P. Chambon, CNRM)


-knowledge of atmospheric science.
-experience in radiative transfer
- knowledge of numerical calculation would be a plus (Fortran90, Unix, Matlab…)
- “lidar and radar” experience would be a plus
-experience in writing scientific articles
-A good command of English is a prerequisite

Work Context

This CDD will take place at LaMP, in Clermont-Fd, in collaboration with people from the Microphysics of Clouds and Precipitation team. The agent will have an office, a PC and access to local calculation servers.
