Missions

The CNRS LAPP (Laboratoire d'Annecy de Physique des Particules) is inviting applications from qualified candidates to serve as Data Scientist within the ESCAPE (European Science Cluster of Astronomy & Particle physics ESFRI research infrastructures) - https://projectescape.eu. ESCAPE aims to address the Open Science challenges shared by ESFRI facilities (CTA, ELT, EST, FAIR, HL‐LHC, KM3NeT, SKA) as well as other pan‐European research infrastructures (CERN, ESO, JIV‐ ERIC, EGO‐ Virgo) in astronomy and particle physics research domains.
Within ESCAPE the ESAP (ESFRI Science Analysis Platform) work package is in charge to develop an Open Science Platform that integrates web-based services to perform interactive data analysis in the cloud, with possibility to develop software and workflows on-line and visualize results.
The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), while not an ESFRI project, is developing an open source Science Platform which is matching a large fraction of the ESAP requirements, thus constituting a useful practical example from which the ESAP could be developed.
The Data Scientist will deploy the Science Platform and will assess both its technical performances and its ability to provide adequate scientific services. The extension of the science platform to other ESFRI projects will also be explored, as well as the possibility to implement multi-catalog cross-correlation services to use it as a multi-messenger astronomy tool.

Activities

The selected candidate will be in charge to deploy and to assess the various components of the LSST Science Platform in good coordination with the LAPP LSST group, the computing centers hosting the platform (either at LAPP or at the IN2P3 Computing Center in Villeurbanne) and the members of the ESCAPE ESAP work package. Once deployed and functionally tested, the platform will be used to access and analyze real and simulated datasets processed with the LSST software. Realistic analysis use cases will be defined and implemented with the help of the local scientists.
An important connection exists between the Science platform and the highly parallel "share nothing" LSST database system Qserv. With the help of the local experts, the selected candidate is expected to acquire the necessary technical knowledge on the database system in order to guarantee a smooth inter-operation of both components.
As a member of the ESAP ESCAPE work package, the selected candidate will also be in charge to produce all the necessary documentation, inputs and deliverables required by the project.

Skills

The selected candidates will have:
· a PhD in physics or a computing engineering degree (level 1),
· an excellent knowledge of modern software programming practices and tools, in particular python and git,
· experience in scientific data analysis methods, data-intensive services, cloud computing, containerized computing services,
· excellent spoken and written English (Level C1),
· a strong interest for science and especially astronomy and astrophysics,
· rigor and reliability,
· good relationship, the sense of organization and of teamwork,
· the ability to manage their work autonomously, be able to take initiatives and be able to adapt quickly to the evolution of the project and tasks,
· the ability to work in the context of a highly distributed international project.

Work Context

LAPP (https://lapp.in2p3.fr/) is a high‐energy physics laboratory located in Annecy, 50 km from Geneva. The laboratory was founded in 1976 and is one of the laboratories of IN2P3 (Institut de Physique Nucléaire et de Physique des Particules), institute of CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). LAPP is a joint research laboratory of the University Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) and the CNRS‐IN2P3. Close to 150 people are working at LAPP. Research carried out at LAPP aims at studying the ultimate constituents of the matter, their fundamental interactions, as well as exploring their connections with the large structures of the Universe. The LAPP laboratory coordinates the ESCAPE project.
The European Union member states, recognizing the challenges of data driven research in pursuing excellent science, have launched the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiative. EOSC is a cloud for research data in Europe allowing for universal access to data through a single online platform. EOSC will federate existing resources across national data centers, e‐infrastructures and research infrastructures allowing researchers and citizens to access and re‐use data produced by other scientists. EOSC success is based on continuous engagement with scientific stakeholders actively supporting its implementation and in their respective capacities.
ESCAPE aims to address the Open Science challenges shared by ESFRI facilities (CTA, ELT, EST, FAIR, HL‐ LHC, KM3NeT, SKA) as well as other pan‐European research infrastructures (CERN, ESO, JIV‐ERIC, EGO‐ Virgo) in astronomy and particle physics research domains. The complexity of all this new apparatus in science grows rapidly, the data volume produced by them is seeing a tremendous increase and the software to analyze the data is becoming more and more complex. On the other hand, this data should be accessible to the growing scientific communities, as they collaborate and interact. The ESCAPE project brings together partners from astronomy and particle physics to collaborate on building the EOSC. The ESCAPE actions aim at delivering solutions to ensure integration of data, tools, services and scientific software; to foster common approaches to implement open‐data stewardship; to establish interoperability within EOSC as an integrated multi‐probe facility for fundamental science.

The Data Scientist will be integrated in the LSST science team at LAPP and as such will be welcome to contribute to the scientific life of the group.
