Windstorms associated with extra-tropical cyclones belong to the most destructive natural disasters over Europe. While the dynamics of cyclones are well documented at the synoptic and mesoscale, the processes responsible for the formation of devastating wind gusts are not well understood and too small-scale to be explicitly represented by numerical weather prediction models. The ANR project WINDGUST (https://anr.fr/Projet-ANR-21-CE01-0002) aims to better represent and understand the formation of wind gusts through innovative numerical simulations with the Meso-NH atmospheric model (http://mesonh.aero.obs-mip.fr/). Such simulations require high resolution over a large domain to represent both fine-scale structures and mesoscale dynamics, as well as advanced physical parameterizations and coupling with various surface models to represent complex interactions. A novel approach to identify coherent structures, based on Lagrangian trajectories, will be extended to track fine-scale objects in the deluge of data from high-resolution simulations.


- Running numerical simulations at very high resolution and with atmosphere-wave-ocean coupling
- Development of new methods of analysis for data at very high resolution
- Interpretation of simulation results in light of recent meteorological literature
- Presentations at international conferences and writing of scientific papers in English-speaking journals
- Participation in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students


- PhD in atmospheric sciences or fluid mechanics
- Strong experience in numerical modeling and programming (Python, Fortran)
- Knowledge of boundary layer processes and at the air-sea interface
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Fluency in English (B2 level)

Work Context

The scientific activity of Laboratoire d'Aérologie (LAERO) aims at observing, modeling and understanding the dynamic and physico-chemical processes that govern the evolution of the atmosphere and the coastal ocean. LAERO develops the atmospheric research model Meso-NH jointly with CNRM in Toulouse. The post-doctorate will be carried out in the MECANO team, benefiting from the scientific expertise and technical support of the Meso-NH model specialists, in collaboration with the members of the ANR project WINDGUST (LAERO, CNRM, LMD). International collaborations are envisaged in the framework of the COST Action MedCyclones (https://medcyclones.utad.pt).
