We are recruiting an engineer for the Evoluthon project, funded by the ANR. The project consists in testing and improving tools for molecular evolution, using computer simulations from artificial life. The originality of this evaluation is that the simulations and inferences are carried out by two independent teams, putting the inference tools in front of an unknown world, best reflecting the situation in front of the biological data. It will be possible to test several tools, or even to organize a competition between teams and tools performing the same task, or to focus on seaview and the tools developed at the Biometrics and Evolutionary Biology Laboratory (LBBE), the host laboratory.
To learn more about the project: https://project.inria.fr/evoluthon/fr/
A thesis is in progress on artificial life, to generate simulated data independent of inference methods.

There will be a development activity, a data analysis activity, and a community organization activity.
- Development: strengthening the integration of tools developed at LBBE (ALE, Treerecs, Thirdkind...) to the seaview platform.
- Analysis: use of tools on data simulated by the team Beagle of Inria
- Organization: competition to test other teams' software on simulated data with artificial life principles
These three types of activities will take more or less importance depending on the skills and motivations of the selected candidate.

- Knowledge in evolutionary biology, genomics
- Software development, C, C++, python, Markov models
- Python analysis, R, descriptive statistics, biological sequence analysis
- Communication and organizational skills
It is not necessary to be operational on all these languages, but a programming habit is expected.

Work Context

The person recruited will be hosted at the LBBE. It is a mixed research unit under the main supervision of the CNRS, the University of Lyon 1 and VetAgroSup and under the secondary supervision of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) and INRIA. The LBBE is a laboratory of evolutionary biology largely multidisciplinary: there are about 200 people, in ecology, medicine, genetics or genomics, mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists ...
The LBBE is located in Villeurbanne, on the campus of La Doua, near downtown Lyon.
The host team is Le Cocon, and the project is a collaboration with the team Bioinformatics, Phylogeny and Evolutionary Genomics (BPGE), the computer science pole, and Inria.
