The main objective is to design some functional blocks of mixed-signal integrated circuit and to define an electro-biological signature to extract biological information from an electrical response of tissues.


The PhD will analyze the results obtained on the first prototypes of Integrated Circuits. He (she) will identify and correct any defects.
Subsequently, he (she) will participate with a second engineer in the design of the missing blocks in the global architecture: analog blocks, mixed-signal and digital (interface, controller ...)
The researcher will have all CAD tools of the Cadence suite.
1 to 2 integrated circuit prototype fabrications are planned in the coming year. Based on these developments, the researcher will propose new architectures to take into account the very particular constraints of life applications. To do this, the researcher will participate in basin experiments that will take place in Reunion Island and cage experiments in Malta.
From the experiments results, the researcher will study the biological signature that could be extracted from the different electrical measurements.


The applicant must have a PhD and experience in analog and mixed-circuit integrated circuit design on Cadence suite tools during his thesis or postdoc. An experience in TSMC 0.18 technology will be a plus. The candidate's motivation to be a driving force in the project and to work in a research environment is essential.

Work Context

The task takes place within the framework of an EMFF project (European structural fund).
The position will be located at the LIRMM in Montpellier in the SMARTIES team. The researcher will have a daily activity in a group composed of five researchers and associate professors, two PhD students and a support engineer.

In the context of collaborative projects, we develop a sensor of physiological parameters for fish that will answer many scientific questions on marine biodiversity.
The physiological parameter sensor consists of an implanted electrode and a microelectronic measurement device embedded in the satellite Tag. A design team has been working on the development of this integrated circuit since 2016. The work of this team led to the definition of the specifications associated with the application, the definition of the hardware architecture as well as the development of two integrated circuit prototypes in 0.18μm AMS and 0.18μm TSMC respectively.
