Missions

The job consists in developing the understanding of a foaming process based on the coupling between extrusion and supercritical fluid. This mission will be based on 2 axes:
- 1 experimental axis with the development of a device for visualizing foaming under pressure,
- 1 axis based on the modeling of nucleation and growth phenomena.

Activities

-The work will consist of advancing the understanding of supercritical CO2 foaming processes based on both experimental study and model development.
The experimental part will aim to study the influence of different operating parameters on the foaming of a polymer of interest for the project. It will be carried out on a high pressure cell equipped with sapphire windows allowing the visualization of the material during foaming. The characterization of the manufactured foams will then be characterized (pycnometry, visualization and thermal analyses).
In parallel, a model, previously developed in the laboratory, will be used and improved in order to correctly represent the experiments carried out. This model is based on the properties of the polymer, pure and mixed with pressurized CO2, and on the phenomena of pore nucleation and growth during foaming. It thus allows either to predict the foaming or to estimate unknown properties on the basis of the foam final properties.
The work will be done under the supervision of several RAPSODEE researchers, in collaboration with the other project teams. The candidate must also report on his work, in writing for the reports and orally during the progress meetings.

Skills

Knowledge in Process Engineering or Plastic Engineering. An appetite for the development of experimental methods and skills in numerical methods (especially with the Matlab language) are necessary. The proportions of the experimental and modeling parts can be adjusted according to the skills of the candidate. Autonomy, reliability, rigor are three qualities appreciated.

Environment) will host the position. This center is structured into two research groups that conduct research in the fields of energy, environment and particulate engineering with an emphasis on sustainable processes: more intense, more efficient, more respectful, and safer.
The work of the recruited person is part of a consortium of 5 academic and industrial french partners, based in Albi, Bordeaux (Pessac, Talence), Lacq and Serquigny. Interactions will be particularly frequent with Bordeaux partners, particularly to support a Ph.D work.
The framework is an ANR collaborative project (edyFICE) which aims to study and develop a continuous process for manufacturing innovative cellular polymers. The REACH regulation, by eliminating the traditional chemicals used in the foams manufacturing, pushes to study and develop new processes more respectful of the environment. The main route, developed for several years, is the one of "physical foaming" by introducing a gas, either in batch (discontinuous process) or by extrusion (continuous process)
