Chiral pollution is an environmental topic of crucial importance, considering that a large number of chemicals spreading into the environment, for example pesticides, are chiral substances. In this collaborative project (H2020-FETOPEN-2018-2021 INITIO) which assembles complementary know-how of six academic units and two private companies from 5 European countries, we are interested in providing devices able to allow rapid on site detection and chiral discrimination of target analytes. The main aims of the global project are: a) the development of novel molecular receptors, mainly based on porphyrin derivatives, b) integration of the receptors with different nanostructures and characterization of their solid state organization, c) deposition of the structures onto transducer surfaces, d) testing and validation of the new chemical sensor devices with enantiomeric pairs of model analytes.


The successful applicant intervenes mainly in the step b), but will work in close relationship with the other postdoc who is already working on the project. The work of the candidate is focuced on the incorporation of porphyrine with the transition metals or rare metals. (S)he will work with the other groups working in other steps in an international and stimulating working environment. The project concerns development of inorganic/hybrid chiral nanostructures based on supramolecular assembly of surfactant based molecules, which will then be used as the chiral platform to induce chirality in achiral functional receptor molecules grafted on their surfaces. These new hybrid structures will be used for sensing the chiral substance/pollutants through chiral host-guest interactions.


The candidate should have good expertise in organic synthesis and should be familiar with sol-gel chemistry and silica surface chemistry, perform UV, IR, CD, VCD, and CPL spectroscopy as well as microscopy techniques (TEM, SEM, OM). The applicant is expected to be highly motivated and to work independently with a strong work ethic. As it is an international project and our group also being strongly international, proficiency in English language is a requirement.

Work Context

-CBMN and IECB are very dynamic, multidisciplinary and international research centers in the campus of Bordeaux University, France. The laboratories are very well equipped for organic chemistry and physical chemistry with top-level technological platforms in physical chemistry and biophysics. As it is an international project, with collaboration with other laboratories from various countries (Italy, Ireland, Finland, Estonia), the researcher will be travelling to other universities, during the project.

Constraints and risks

Hygiene and safety related to the manipulation of chemical products. The organic synthesis experiments will be performed in the laboratory at IECB equipped and functional with fume hoods.
