The research work will take place in the framework of the BHEE joint laboratory (High Energy Efficiency Buildings) binding the CETHIL laboratory (Centre for Energy and Thermal Sciences of Lyon) laboratory and the TREE department (Technology and Research for Energy Efficiency) of EDF R&D.
In the context of the digital transition, the building industry is today at the heart of a deep transformation. The development of BIM (Building Information Modelling) opens up new perspectives, making it possible to facilitate access to data and to develop digital tools and services which will drive the different phases of building life cycle (design, operation, renovation). Building energy simulation tools have now reached a high level of maturity, and the new challenges concern, for instance, the implementation of methods guaranteeing digital continuity from the BIM model to the simulation results, the upscaling from the building level to the district level, the coupled modeling of multi-physical phenomena (eg heat transfer, indoor air quality) and multi-scale phenomena (eg interactions between the building and its environment, microclimate, energy networks), or the integration of these tools into real digital twins based on actual data and capable of supporting decisions. These underlying trends, which concern both data and tools, provide an opportunity to better respond to the challenges of energy transition and to the objectives of reducing energy consumption in buildings and the associated carbon footprint, while preserving the comfort of the occupants.
The MEB team (Modelling, Environment and Buildings), within the TREE department, has developed the MyBEM toolchain, based on the gbXML interoperable format, enabling to go from building 3D models to energy simulations. Downstream of this chain, two types of simulation tools can be used:
• Detailed system modeling oriented tools, such as BuildSysPro (a library of models written in Modelica language and dynamically simulated with Dymola), for use in studies and producing benchmark results.
• Performance optimized tools (trade off between computational cost and accuracy), such as the Romulus computing core, for use in support of operational entities of the EDF Group.
The objective of the mission will be to participate in the work concerning the operational branch of the MyBEM chain, via the development of the Romulus tool, a new generation of building energy computation core.
In collaboration with EDF R&D research engineers and academic partners, the person will participate to the development of modules dealing with systems interacting with the building, and enriching functionalities beyond thermal uses:
• Understanding of the adopted approach and the architecture targeted for the Romulus computing core.
• Development of modules and models of energy systems (heating, air conditioning, domestic hot water) to be connected to the linear system for the calculation of the power demand and associated consumption.
• Design and development of a module producing scenarios for the use of different building equipment (temperature setpoints, domestic hot water, specific electricity).
• Adaptation of data and calculation assumptions for the future use of the tool on residential and tertiary buildings.
• Doctoral degree in building physics, energy or civil engineering.
• Expertise in heat transfer and energy applied to buildings.
• Competence in 0D/1D modelling of complex systems.
• Advanced skills in Python programming.
• Good command of French and English are mandatory.
The CETHIL is a public research laboratory located at Campus de la Doua in Villeurbanne (France) affiliated to three institutions: INSA Lyon, CNRS and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.
The post-doctoral researcher will join the THEBE team (Thermal and Energy Sciences Applied to the Buildings and their Environment). Work will mainly take place at the EDF Lab Les Renardières in Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne (France) in collaboration with an EDF R&D team focussing on energy simulation tools and in building technologies (envelope, indoor air quality). The researcher will be at the heart of the building energy efficiency topic, with challenges centred on reducing CO2 emissions and developing solutions dedicated to both existing and new buildings.
