CNRM is developing a next generation data assimilation scheme for the convective scale AROME model. AROME is the flagship, high resolution numerical model of Météo-France. The development of the AROME towards more advanced data assimilation is possible through the use of the Object-Oriented Prediction System (OOPS), a flexible framework for data assimilation that separates the algorithm from its model-dependent implementation and that is shared by various institutes around the world.

This post-doctoral fellowship will contribute the development of a new assimilation scheme, which is formulated as variational and which uses ensembles to better describe the statistical structure of background errors. This post-doctoral fellowship will contribute the scientific and technical development of the non-linear aspects of the scheme.


This post-doctoral fellowship will contribute the scientific and technical development of the non-linear aspects of the scheme. The goal is to implement successive linearizations of the ensemble around more and more precise trajectories, and to evaluate the meteorological impact in the OOPS framework.


We are looking for candidates with a good knowledge of data assimilation and/or numerical optimization. A demonstrated experience to work with complex codes as used in Numerical Weather Prediction would be appreciated. The candidates should have good ability to work in team, as well as a strong motivation for joining us on this project. Working languages are English and French. Experience with FORTRAN and C++ as well as MPI for distributed computing would be an important asset.

Work Context

This post-doctoral fellowship is part of the SuNDAE project founded by ANR and leaded by CNRM in collaboration with ENPC and IRIT. The successful candidate will be hosted at CNRM, although there is an option to stay at ENPC, Paris for 3 to 6 months.
